Under-16s win the Inaugural SDFA Cup

Updated: Aug 16, 2019

Having come runners up to AFC Bournemouth in the Hampshire FA Cup, the under-16s won their first trophy, beating Winchester City Flyers 2-0 in a close match at AFC Totton.

The game was played in warm conditions on a hard pitch at the Testwood Community Stadium, with 2 strong defences proving difficult to beat.

Southampton started brightly, the first 15 minutes played in the Winchester half, and they were able to turn this possession into a well deserved goal, Mia F sending a long ball across the area, which was well met by Zoe, tapping in at the end of a trademark run at the back post.

This pattern continued for the rest of the first half, the Southampton back four mopping up anything that Winchester had to offer, but with chances at the other end few and far between.

The second half began with the incident that settled the final; Ava broke into the penalty area, and was brought down by a Winchester defender.

Penalty award, which was dispatched clinically by Charlotte, 2-0, and one hand on the cup.

The rest of the game was a tale of two defences, with no major scares to the Southampton defence.
