Report | Under-16s v Portsmouth ITC Hampshire Cup Semi-Final

Updated: Aug 16, 2019

The under-16s bounced back from last week's disappointment against Richmond Park to beat a strong Pompey team 3-0 in overcast conditions in Gosport this morning.

Southampton started well against a tough well organised Pompey team.

Becca worked hard to make a couple of chances early on, but could not find a way past the Pompey keeper, but Southampton pressure paid off after 25 minutes, when Ella scored from the edge of the area after working an opening on the right hand side.

Pompey pressed for an equaliser, but could not find a way past the defence, Izzy able to deal with a number of long shots from the Pompey midfield.

The tense exchange continued for much of the second half, the 1-0 lead doing nothing for the nerves of the supporters on the touchline.

The Southampton defence was holding up well, with Pompey finding no way past the back four and the midfield mopping up most of the ball in the centre.

10 minutes from the end, Mia F's determination largely settled the tie. she won the ball in a crowded penalty area and slotted in past the Pompey keeper to make it 2-0, a well deserved goal to top an excellent display by Mia.

Emma scored a third to put the game to bed five minutes from the end, finishing well in a one on one against the keeper, and Southampton ended up 3-0 winners and progress to the final, where they will meet AFC Bournemouth.

A great display from the whole team who can look forward to the final in March.
