MR | U16 v Chichester LFC Friendly

Updated: Sep 16, 2018

On a pleasant evening Southampton U16 lined up against Chichester U16 for a pre-season friendly. Grace Jenman was drafted in as a late replacement in goal, for Izzy, due to a finger injury.

Both teams started brightly as they sought control of the midfield. On 2' Southampton were given the chance to take an early lead. Ava ran into the area from a clever pass by Lucy A and collided with the onrushing keeper. The referee immediately pointed to the spot. Becky hit the penalty powerfully but too high.

Southampton started to take control and Becky got her goal on 13', neatly finding the bottom left corner with a low shot from just inside the area.

After 23' the first of Southampton's substitution were made, Mia I, Mia F, Hayley and Emma replacing Megan, Hannah, Becky and Lucy A. On 29' Southampton went 2-0 up. Emma smashed the ball into the roof of the net from a cross by Ava.

Southampton continued to dominate and Chichester struggled to cope with their free flowing football. Southampton's defence remained solid offering Chichester nothing apart from one long range shot wide of the goal, in the half.

A string of near misses continued up until half time, thanks in the main to a fine display from the Chichester keeper. H/T 2-0.

Manager Aaron made further substitutions at half time. On came Becky, Hannah, Lucy A and Megan replacing Elise, Charlotte, Ava and Lucy C.

Southampton were soon into their stride again and after 42' went 3-0 up. Hayley fed the ball to Mia I who burst forward on the angle, she sent a looping shot from the edge of the area into the far corner.

Two minutes later Southampton scored again. Becky's cross shot was tipped wide of the right hand post. Emma's corner was met by Sky-Louise's well timed run as she headed inside the left post. 4-0.

Southampton continued to press Chichester back into their own half and scored again on 58'. Becky scoring inside the area after good work and cross by Zoe, for her second. 5-0.

On the hour Grace was forced into her first save following a Chichester breakaway. The Chichester No.9 shot high towards the centre of the goal but Grace saved comfortably.

Two minutes later Southampton had scored again. Lucy A found Becky whose initial shot nutmegged the keeper and she followed up to score into the empty net to complete her hat-trick. 6-0.

Further substitutions were immediatley made. Zoe, Hayley, Mia I and Emma were replaced by Elise, Charlotte, Ava and keeper Izzy who played in central defence.

Southampton continued to impress. The defence moving the ball at speed across the back, then feeding the midfielders who were ready to supply the willing runs of the forwards.

Their good play was rewarded with a seventh goal on 67'. Sky-Louise scored her second, up from the back, she hit a half volley from the edge of the area into the corner of the net following a pass from Charlotte. 7-0.

The final substitutions were then made. Lucy C, Hayley, Mia I and Emma replacing Becky, Ava, Hannah and Skye-Louise.

Credit to Chichester as they didn't let their heads drop and fought for every ball until the end. Their keeper being particularly impressive. As well as her shot stopping she showed good anticipation and cleared several dangerous situations.

As the light faded following the brief glimpse of the setting sun below the clouds, the game drew to it's conclusion. However, not before Southampton scored their eighth goal with the last kick of the game.

Hayley passed to Emma across the edge of the area. Her shot nestled just inside the right post giving the keeper no chance, for her second. 8-0.

An overall good display from Southampton. The girls looked like a team that have been playing together a lot longer than they have. Encouraging signs for the season ahead.
