Southampton dominated and deservedly won thanks to a great individual goal by Ava (15’). She cut in from the left beating a couple of defenders on the edge of the box and then sent a powerful drive inside the left post.
Match 3: Southampton 0 Alderbury 1
A close fought match in which Southampton had the better of the early chances. However, Alderbury finished strongly and scored the only goal of the game. A long ball over the Southampton defence was latched onto by the Alderbury forward who finished confidently, giving Izzy no chance (21’). Southampton had some late opportunities to equalise, but none were taken.
Match 4: Romsey 0 Alderbury 0
Match 5: Southampton 1 Romsey 1
Romsey proved a tougher test in their second game. Despite Southampton having early dominance, Romsey took the lead from close range after a scramble in the Southampton area (5’). Skye-Louise nearly equalised when she hit a 25yds dipping free kick from the centre, which skimmed the top of the net. However, Southampton were deservedly soon level. Becky's shot was pushed wide by the keeper. The resultant corner was swung in by Charlotte. Ella reached for the ball just inside the area, the ball coming off her knee and bouncing into the top right corner via a Romsey defender's outstretched arm (17’). Southampton came agonisingly close to finding a winner on full time from a corner. Skye-Louise's header hitting the right post rebounded to Becky whose shot hit the left post.
Match 6: Alderbury 0 Southampton 1
Southampton knew they had to win their final match to deny Alderbury overall tournament victory. Again, most of the possession took place in the Alderbury half but there were few clear chances. Alderbury remained dangerous with their fast counter attacks. On 13’ Emma came close to scoring after pressuring the keeper into a mistake but her shot went narrowly wide of the near post. As the minutes started ticking down it looked like the game would end in stalemate, despite late pressure Southampton pressure. In the last minute the Alderbury goal was finally breached. Charlotte picked up the ball just inside the Alderbury half. She hit a speculative looking shot that dipped perfectly under the bar beyond the keeper's outstretched arms (24’). Alderbury had no time to hit back leaving Southampton deserved winners.
