Report | Under-12s v AFC Bournemouth

Updated: Aug 16, 2019

Bitterly cold winds, driving rain and freezing temperatures didn’t stop play and the girls braved the elements to battle through an hour of play to the final whistle.

An early shot by Bournemouth saw goalkeeper Emma Stait grab the ball in what was the first of many saves.

Before long Darcey Maxted got the ball to Chloe Sheffield, but this was an end to end game, so Bournemouth soon seized possession and crossed the ball into the danger zone.

Victoria Orji defended strongly and kicked the ball out of danger.

Within eight minutes Chloe’s ball in to Darcey led to a cracking attempt at goal but the Bournemouth keeper made an equally cracking save.

Pippa Sproul battled incredibly hard throughout the entire match and started as she meant to go on, winning the ball time and time again.

An attempt at goal by Bournemouth soon found Emma’s hands and, a short while later in the 11th minute Bournemouth found the back of the net with their first goal. 1-0 to Bournemouth.

As the rain fell harder, Mo, Darcey, Pippa and Chloe made some great passes but Bournemouth defence was strong.

Southampton continued to battle with Pippa breaking out to make a great run and dribble right up to the keeper to take a shot, but Bournemouth made another save and the ball travelled back up field.

Sophie Moore did some amazing defending and continued to win the ball back from the opposition time and time again.

While Pippa Sproul made her presence felt in midfield, regularly winning the ball from Bournemouth.

Bournemouth continued to battle well and half way through the first half, had another strong attempt at goal, but they weren’t able to get it past Emma who made a great save.

With just 10 minutes to go before the end of the first half and Darcey scored an equaliser for Southampton which Bournemouth tried to clear off the line, but it found the back of the net.

Unfortunately, the Southampton goal was ruled offside by the linesperson.

But Southampton weren’t about to give up and Pippa came from nowhere to run up the line to win the ball back. Some strong passing between Robyn, Esme, Mo, Victoria and Pippa followed, resulting in a strong cross from Chloe to Pippa. But strong defending by Bournemouth prevented another goal.

Southampton did equally well in defence with Sophie holding off Bournemouth and running up field to get the ball in to Chloe who crossed the ball in towards the goal.

A little while later and it was Darcey’s turn to win the ball back and cross in to Mo who went to take a shot but was just short of reaching the ball in time.

In the second half, Michelle Orji came on for Robyn Hagues and prevented a Bournemouth corner with some clever footwork.

The ball was soon travelling back up field but Emma made another great save. Bournemouth regained possession but Sophie won the ball back and Victoria kicked the ball out of danger.

However, half way through the second half, with now frozen hands and wet gloves, the ball slipped through Emma’s hands to make the scoreline 2-0 to Bournemouth.

Despite being 2-0 down the girls held their heads up and battled on. Sophie and Victoria did some amazing defending and, up front, Mo won the ball back from Bournemouth and got it across to Michelle and into Darcey.

Shortly afterwards, Pippa made another attempt which unluckily travelled wide.

Back up the other end of the pitch and Emma made another great save and Poppy Baxter and Brooke Suddaby came on for Esme Taylor and Mo Delaney.

A Bournemouth corner followed and Southampton keeper Emma made a cracking save, diving onto the cold mud to secure the ball.

With just a minute left, Bournemouth sneaked a ball into the top right hand corner to make the final score 3-0 to Bournemouth.

A brave performance by both teams in such bitterly cold conditions.

Full-time: Southampton 0 Bournemouth 3
